Bella Ciao : An Organic and Utopian Bakery in Avignon

We discovered this organic bakery at a wine tasting trade fair bringing together all the winemakers from the Rhône Valley.
All pieces of bread and other delicious dishes are made with 100% organic ingredients, without pesticides and synthetic chemicals.
Bella Ciao bakery asserts itself as a utopian bakery, and isn’t it a dope name for a bakery?
Looking to work bread with only local and organic products is really a successful bet in their case.
We were able to take a very nice snack for the road and return to Paris.

Bella Ciao : An organic bakery in the heart of Avignon

The bakery displays at the entrance its commitment to produce only breads and organic buns. Different panels in the shop show their commitment to the values of organic farming.

It is thanks to a Google search that we were able to discover this bakery which is nestled in the heart of the maze of medieval streets of the old city. And if you have the opportunity to pass in this street there is little chance that you miss it: the bright blue of the front is unmissable!

The values of the shop are written on a large blackboard that welcomes us. And it is with these words that the visitor is invited to discover the method of making bread from the Bella Ciao bakery:

Here we make natural leavened organic bread made from slow fermentation. We make sure to use only healthy products, respectful of life…

The breads are produced with flour without pesticides, without additives and without improvers and we are invited to eat differently and with consciousness by crossing the threshold of the shop.

Breads and tasty buns

Failing to have found pastries on the spot, we were able to opt for one of the specialities of the house.
A very nice brioche and fougasses with Nyons’ olives. And a piece of Homemade Pizza for the road. And we were not disappointed!
In addition to being made with organic products, everything we’ve tasted is definitely worth your time.
The fougasse is particularly good, the lightness of the crumb echoes the quality of olives used, fleshy and tasty. And the shares of Pizza were also very good, even eaten cold because reserved for later in the day.

A beautiful discovery!

A Little Taste of New York

Starting the trip in the U.S with New York

Few years ago we went to the U.S. and flew to New York City to start a month of wandering through this gigantic country.
We stay for a week to discover Big Apple and we were so amazed by the scenic view of the city we decide to shoot videos among photos for the first time with our DSLR.

At this time we were both shooting with a Canon 7D and different lens.

Here is a taste of the scenic view and urban life in the different area of mostly Manhattan. (New York is so big we didn’t see the island totally and don’t have the time to explore the others area of the city, until next time! 😉 ).

Hope you will enjoy !

A Little Taste of New York City

The inevitable Brooklyn Bridge

We walked a lot in the streets of new york and our steps inevitably brought us to the Brooklyn bridge during the golden hour.
It’s one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. It crosses the East River to connect the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

It offers a long walk of almost two kilometers to cross, and one of the most scenic view you could have of the New York Skyline.

Chinatown, NoLiTa & Soho

As you walk for the first time in the streets of New York, some place are just unmistakble, so we go wherever our feet could handle it.
Here is just little snaps of the different ambiance you encounter when you pass district to district in this area.

Maybe Newyorker didn’t take make attention of the yellow cab, but we did, and I do not get tired of taking pictures, no matter if it gets a little too much. 🙂

Meat Pack district and the Sky Line

Meat pack district is an old industrial neighbourhoud where you could start the walk through the sky line.
It’s a pleasant city trail where you could see Manhattan from above.

Here is few pics from this day :

New York we barely touched you

After more nine days in the city, we barely touched its heart. Never a city had this effect on us: never bored, never tired. We will come back, there are so many things we didn’t see and didn’t do.

Barcelona Tribu Woki organic market

Tribu Woki Organic Market : A Nice Organic Store in Barcelona!

To make a break amid the madness of this spring, we decided to enjoy the sun in preview. And to leave a few days in Barcelona at the beginning of May.
It was an opportunity to discover the city from a personal angle. To walk there, looking for good products, good addresses and good wine bars in particular!

And it was at the corner of an alley that we came across Tribu Woki Organic Market, a pretty nice organic shop in Barcelona!
We found the atmosphere and the services offered so cool that we decided to do “some” photos to illustrate this concept. Because it has a lot of success in the city, so much so that their 7th store is currently opening!

We suggest you take a little tour with us to discover why we liked this concept.

A committed tone in favor of organic

The tone is set. Whether the name or the poster sits at the entrance. Everything explains the 5 good reasons to eat Organic!
Personally I really like to defend the values of organic farming. There is no reason to be shy! Those who disrupt this mode of culture, are not. And it is really important to reaffirm every day that organic products militate for a better future. For men as for our planet.
So we were pretty happy and to find this!

Fresh organic products to eat on site or take away in a relaxed setting

From the entrance, we do not see much of the store. It stretches all the way to widen at the bottom. But if you miss out on it and enjoy the warm atmosphere, you should not go wrong!
We enter to discover a showcase with fresh products. Cookies, hummus or pies, fresh organic bread and a stand to buy burgers or woks.

Tables are installed at the bottom of the store and you can access to another floor devoted to a large room where you can settle down quietly.
If we had not arrived too late to order we would be happy to sit!

A Nice Organic Shop in Barcelone with locals suppliers

The shelves are filled with products. And many of us were completely unknown. Indeed even if Barcelona is only a few hundred kilometers from the French border, Spanish organic products do not necessarily have good press here …
This shop offered a lot of Spanish references to support their national production and even many local references.

If you are looking for a nice organic store in Barcelona, then why not go for it?
Indeed the other shops that we met on the way look like our pseudo-organic supermarkets looking to surf the green wave.
There is the opposite! The shop makes you want to eat organic and vehicle a jolly-nothing-it, which makes you want to go shopping!

Things to know : this shop is open until midnight! It’s surprise us to see it open so late at night.
We were also looking for a wine bar where to discover good organic Spanish wines when we crossed this shop … but that’s the subject of another article;)

Wine Road Trip : The Rhone Valley

After visiting the Wine Road of Burgundy in the first part of the road trip : We were staying in Lyon for fews days before taking the road again to the Rhone Valley.

Route des vins du rhone road trip viticole

The Rhone Valley is a very large wine region, where you could fine little and big wines along the river that runs through the area.
This wine-growing region is so big, in wine education they talked about it in two parts : the north of the valley and the south of it (after the city of Valence).
The wines are a differents in the two area because of the climate and the altitude of the parcels of vines.

The Rhone Valley starts few kilometers in the south of Lyon : it’s 30 minutes drive to arrived in Ampuis, the famous village where you find Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie wines.

So we start the beggining of the road-trip by a stop to this famous place.

The “Côtes rôties” are red wines made from Syrah. While the “Condrieu”  are powerful whites made from Viognier. This variety is very particular and is the reputation of this appellation.
This white grape which is the reputation of Condrieu has the defect of being very easily heavy and not refreshing. But here the climatic and geological conditions are met to give the best of itself. And it is for this reason that the appellation is famous throughout the world.

The peculiarity of these appellations is to be located along the Rhone on the very steep slopes of the hills that overlook the city below.

From the top of the vineyards the landscape is breathtaking and offers us a magnificent view over the valley where the Rhône winds its way.

The beginning of the road trip : Ampuis, AOC Condrieu et Côte Rôtie

The weather in August was ideal to visit the region: the sun and some clouds in a turquoise blue sky accompanied us throughout our visit to the south.

This part of the roadtrip was also much more interesting for the wine tasting than the first part in Burgundy where many winemakers were absent.

In Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie it is Domaine Barou and Domaine Georges Vernay, both in organic farming, who were pleased to receive us to discover the wonders of Viognier and Syrah grown and vinified in single varietals .

The vines of these two AOCs have the particularity of not being conducted in the same way as elsewhere: they are rolled during their growth along two intersecting wooden poles that are called “échalas”.

This method is rather striking and rather aesthetic in the middle of the landscape!

Second stage of the Rhone Wine Route : Tain l’Hermitage

Continuing further south, it is a new Grand Cru emblematic of the Rhone will be one of our next steps.

Tain l’Hermitage is home to the Hermitage Hill, whose most prestigious Rhône wines are named after them.

All around is Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and further south Cornas and Saint-Peray. These appellations of the northern Rhone Valley are very popular with lovers of good red wines, but also white, less known but really good !

Route des vins du rhone road trip viticole

Third step : The South of the Rhone Valley, Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Lirac…

It is in Orange that we put our suitcases for some time, just to enjoy this part of the region that offers a wide choice of appellation and very different styles of wine.

Indeed the Côtes du Rhône north are now behind us, and Orange offers a place of choice to shine in the heart of the Southern Côtes du Rhône region.

Thus a few kilometers alongside: Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Sobres wines, Beaumes de Venise, Tavel …

What to fill our days (and the back seat of the car 😉 ).
The back country is fill with vineyards and olive trees, and we walk in the fields under the ubiquitous crickets singing.

In the summer some areas even organize parties with ephemeral bar and food truck in the middle of vineyards: this is the case of the Domaine des Arnaud, where the two brothers succeeded their father to maintain the family estate.
The peculiarity of the estate is that it has never used pesticides and chemicals in its plots of vineyards and olive groves. They have never stopped being organic since the beginning.

After having traveled the roads of this beautiful region and encountered among the best organic and biodynamic winemakers in the region (Domaine Vallot, Domaine de la Ferme des Arnaud, Château Juvenal, Domaine de Beaurenard, Domaine Montirius, Domaine du Joncier, … just to name a few…).

It’s time to take you to Bordeaux for the third stage of this Road Trip!

Wine Road Trip : On the Roads of Burgundy

We are passionate about wine and by hitting the road to make the best road-trip every time we could.

So we decide to make the two passions happens together : This is how we ended up traveling for a month on the wine roads, meeting Burgundy, the Rhone Valley and the Bordeaux region.

Four weeks of intense field visits, wine-growers’ meetings and on-the-spot discoveries of regions that have been studied for so long through the labels of our favourite wines.

We made this road trip in 2015, under a blazing sun and the hottest summer that France has known for a decade.

Burgundy from North to South

Arrived at the level of Dijon by the north: it is time to leave the motorway and to immerse oneself in the region to the more quiet rhythm of the little roads throughout out the backcountry.
From here begins the real road trip and immersion in the wines of the region.

It was an incredible pleasure to see this region as sunny, the vineyards aligned as on the postcards, their bunches of grapes being gorged with a radiant sun.

However, if you want to meet winegrowers in this region, avoid leaving in August. It’s a really “dead” month to do domain visits.

Most winemakers take advantage of this time of the year to leave a few weeks while the vineyard finishes their maturation before the harvest in September.
And it was very difficult for us to meet people on the spot among our favourite areas.

Ce fut une excellente expérience, mais si vous partez pour visiter, appeler avant les domaines et pensez à privilégier une autre période de l’année.

It was an excellent experience, but if you are going to visit, call before the estates and think of privileging another time of the year.

For us, it was therefore more the occasion to make a road trip in the middle of the vineyards than to meet the producers.
And Burgundy this season is particularly pleasant: bright sun, picnic in the middle of beautiful landscapes and bunches of grapes almost ready to give a new vintage.

The legendary “clos” of the region are beautiful, and the simple fact of passing from villages to villages and to appear on the panels of cities the names that are more used to see on wine labels is quite curious, and amusing.

As we descend from Gevrey-Chambertin via Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Beaune, to Chalon-sur-Saône, these are all the prestigious names, known throughout the world as we could see on the panels of the villages we were crossing.

Geeksphotographers road trip bourgogne la route des vins de bourgogne

Burgundy has a rather special climate: in the middle of the land, the climate is rather continental. Summer can therefore often be quite hot, while harsh winters are also the norm.

Lyon: at the junction between the wine regions

This road trip wine to bring us to visit three major regions throughout a month: after Burgundy, direction the Rhone.
But before: small city break in Lyon before starting the roads of the Rhone Valley.

So it’s a great stopover in the old Lyon that was waiting for us: nice and sunny in the middle of August.
We also discovered a nice wine bar with many organic and biodynamic references and an excellent proposition of tapas.

This city clearly wants to be discovered! 🙂
